This week's Organizing Tip

Returns

We all buy stuff and then return stuff that didn't work out for some reason. I seem to do that a lot and have found it easier to return an item as soon as possible and not wait until 2 weeks or a month has gone by. Then the item and/or the receipt is not lost. More important, the money the item represents is not lost either.

This is especially true for things that are bought on a credit card. The sooner it is returned, the sooner the credit goes on the credit card - ideally on the same statement that the charge is on so they cancel each other out and you're not paying for something that was returned.

TIP: When something that has been purchased comes into the house, keep it in the bag along with the receipt until you decide to keep it or return it. If you keep it, keep the receipt until any warranty period is over. If you want to return it, make it a conscious errand and do so within a few days. That makes one less thing you have to keep track of.
